Oral Intrepretation Festival

Oral Interpretation Festival is an enrichment activity where students Kindergarten through 5th grade celebrate literature and practice in public speaking through performance and communication skills.
Dates:
 Optional coaching sessions are October 10, 17, 24 and 30 from 3:35 to 4:30 in Music room
Nov 7 6pm to 7 pm. Shaffer Oral Interpretation Festival In Shaffer’s gym
South Jeffco Area Oral Interpretation Festival hosted by Shaffer on Nov. 15

Here is how it works:

Literary Selections:

Virtually all types of literature can be used; some examples are a poem, speech, monologue, excerpts from books or plays, song lyrics or write your own piece! Look for a short, strong story or passage.  It can be a piece of larger work, as long as it can stand alone as a complete story to the audience.

Memorization:

Each participate does their best to memorize the piece of literature they selected then recites it on stage for an audience.

Performing:

Students may present as individuals or groups.  Groups may have up to 5 maximum students.  Groups will perform with the HIGHEST grade level involved.  Example: If your group has a kindergarten and 3rd grader in it, the group will perform with the 3rd grade level.

Time:

The performance is not to exceed 5 minutes. There is no minimum.

Participation:

Students participate in grade level clusters:

            Kindergarten & 1st grade

            2nd and 3rd grade

            4th and 5th grade

Competition and Awards:

The goal of the competition is to encourage the participant’s exploration of literary selections, and enhance the student’s public speaking skills through performance.   Participating in the competition is highly encouraged but not mandatory.

Participating in the competition: Each grade level cluster is awarded a first, second and third places.  All competing students will receive feedback on their performance and have the     opportunity to possibly move forward in competing against other schools in the Area Oral   Interpretation Festival.

First, Second and Third places from each grade level cluster that chose to compete will move on to represent Shaffer in the Area Oral Interpretation Festival.

Helpful Hints:

Literary Selections: Help your child choose an appropriate piece that they enjoy reading and fits them.   We encourage students to think beyond popular works and dive deeper into literature.

How YOU can help: Help your child choose appropriate literature.  Help your child memorize their selection.  Your child can practice before a mirror, in front of people (family members) and multiple times.  Please remind your child of appropriate audience behavior.

Coaching sessions: Coaches will work with participants during practice times on verbal delivery, including tone, projection, inflection, pronunciation, as well as eye contact, facial expressions and gestures.

The most important advice we can offer is simple. Do your best! This means that you should do your best to practice and reflect upon your experiences. Public speaking and drama is a journey. Enjoy the process!
