A Parent’s Perspective on the Leader in Me Program
Written By: Anne-Marie Braga, aka “Luciana and Dominic’s Mom”

Almost two years ago, I was lucky enough to join some of our Shaffer teachers and principal to visit a school that was fully implementing the Leader in Me program. I was stunned. As I walked in, students greeted me with smiles, guided me to an assembly and then showed me how they take on leadership roles in every grade. I was most impressed with the Kindergarteners who had selected wildly important goals or WIGs - something that is all the rage with businesses and organizations nowadays. They were charting the number of books they read in order to reach their targets. I thought to myself, “Could we really make this happen at Shaffer?”

And here we are, less than two years later, being greeted by students when we walk into the school, hearing our kids recite the 7 Habits and seeing our amazing Shaffer staff empowering students to lead at every age. These things will help our children learn 21st century skills such as critical thinking and problem solving; initiative and self-direction; social and cross-cultural skills; communication and collaboration; flexibility and adaptability; productivity and accountability; creativity and innovation; and leadership and responsibility.
